✦Archetype and General Meaning
The Hierophant (High Priest) is the archetype of the Guide, Master Teacher, and the link between people and the sacred (the holy and the higher). While the High Priestess holds esoteric knowledge and keeps it secret, the Hierophant's task is to systemize this knowledge and pass it on to the masses. He is a symbol of tradition, religious dogmas, science, institutionalized education, and a broadly understood system of beliefs or morality. He represents the search for the deep meaning of existence based on established values.
✦Psychology and Inner World
People with a strong vibration of the Hierophant have an innate need to understand "why." You have a highly developed moral compass. You are a noble person, a seeker of truth, and are often seen in your environment as a sage to whom others come for advice in difficult moral dilemmas. You respect education and history. You have a very strong need to belong to a group whose ideas align with your own, finding your "spiritual family" is crucial for your happiness.
✦Potential
Your greatest gift is the ability to translate what is difficult and complicated into language that others can understand.
- ◆The gift of teaching: You are a natural mentor, teacher, coach, or lecturer.
- ◆Moral authority: People have immense trust in you because they see you are honest and guided by higher principles.
- ◆Building tradition: You can create a wonderful community around you connected by strong values.
✦Shadow
An unintegrated Hierophant becomes a dogmatist and fanatic. The shadow manifests here as the belief that one holds the monopoly on the only absolute truth (the cult member or guru syndrome). You may impose your beliefs on others, despising those who have a different value system. Another face of the shadow is blindly following tradition or authorities ("because custom/religion/family dictates it"), completely cutting off your own inner voice and losing authenticity.
✦Relationships and Emotions
In relationships, you seek more than just romance, you are looking for a "holy covenant." A relationship is a serious institution and commitment for you. You are loyal, often very traditional in your approach to roles within a relationship. It is highly important to you that your partner shares your views on the world, religion, philosophy, and the upbringing of children. If ideological differences are too great, the Hierophant will sooner leave than compromise his core moral principles.
✦Symbolism
- ◆Crossed keys at his feet: They symbolize the keys to knowledge, the conscious and subconscious mind. The ability to open the gates to mysteries.
- ◆Gesture of blessing (raised hand): An esoteric sign of transmitting teachings, blessing, and protection.
- ◆Two monks at his feet: Represent the student and listener, the dualism of human nature, and the position of the Hierophant as the sole mediator between the disciple and the deity.
- ◆Crown with three tiers: Represents the three worlds in which the Hierophant holds authority: physical, astral, and spiritual (mind, body, spirit).
✦Example of Action in Life
Recall that one exceptional teacher from school or university who not only taught formulas or dates but taught how to live, how to be a good person, and how to think independently. The kind of teacher with whom a conversation, even years later, fills you with immense respect and uplifts your spirit. That is the purest vibration of the Hierophant, passing the light of truth to subsequent generations in an ethical and orderly manner.
